THE TOWN WHERE I WAS BORN
My home town is Smolyan .It is a town in the very south of Bulgaria, the administrative center of Smolyan Province. It is situated in the valley of the Cherna ("Black") and the Byala ("White") Rivers in the central Rhodopes at the foot of the mountains' highest part south of the popular ski resort Pamporovo .
According to archaeological evidence, the area around Smolyan was first settled in the 2nd-1st millennium BC. It acquired its name from the Slavic tribe of the Smolyani that settled in the region in the 7th century. Many years ago it was known in Ottoman Turkish as Pashmaklı Town.
The modern town of Smolyan was formed by the merger of three existing villages — Ustovo, Raykovo and Ezerovo — in 1960
Today the Smolyan is the administrative centre of a district, a town whose image is changing constantly.
It is situated in a picturesque valley at an altitude of 1,010m above sea level along the river Cherna amid a natural setting of peaks, rocks, pine-trees,meadows and lakes.
The once three small villages of Smolyan , Raikovo and Ustovo with a total of 7000 inhabitants have now merged into a big town with a population of about 40,000. The old lifestick-breeding and crafts have given way to a moderen economy. Many new plants, restaurants, hotels and private holiday houses have recently been built in the town. The new city centre is a veritable architectural masterpiece. My town is unique combination of old and modern architecture,
It is rich in historical and cultural monuments , schools, universities, museums, old houses, bridges, mosques ,churches and small chapels . The largest church in southern Bulgaria, the Cathedral of Saint Vissarion of Smolyan, was built in the city in July 2006.
Due to its suitable location on top of Mount Rozhen, the Bulgarian National Astronomical Observatory is located nearby, with a planetarium in operation in the town.. There is one theatre, the Rhodope Drama Theatre and two big stadiums. Smolyan has an elite division football team, that has been playing in the A Professional Football Group since the 2002-2003 season. There is also a regional historical museum.
The historical museum in Smolyan is the oldest and the biggest in the Middle Rhodopes. It was founded in 1935 and its aim is to explore, study, preserve and popularise the uniqueness of its artistic value and its historical important heritage of the people, inhabiting the central part of the Rhodopes.
A specially designed buildings house of the museum overlooking both - the old and the new town of Smolyan. It has a panoramic view to the peaks - Karlak, Perelik and Sokolitza, praised in many songs, dedicated to the Rhodope mountain. The exhibition halls present the permanent attractive arranged exhibition "Cultural Heritage of the Rhodopes from Antiquity till Nowadays". They together with vast lobbies for temporary exhibitions occupy an area nearly 2000 m2, at 4 levels.
For many years the museum has gathered a lot of various collections of museum exponents - many of them are unique of character.
